This new production, once again in the form of a film concert story, is based on the story of Yvo’s mother, Julieke de Levie, who, as a 13-year-old girl, had to go into hiding just like her entire family and, after various addresses in Friesland, eventually ended up on Schiermonnikoog. She survived the war thanks to teacher Martha Karst, who took Julieke into her home. Upon returning to Amsterdam after the liberation of Schiermonnikoog in June 1945, it turned out that although the family had survived the war, a happy ending does not always mean that everything goes well afterwards.

When Yvo himself was 13, Julieke became entangled in a severe depression and took her own life. Julieke was 50 at the time.

Was it a choice, or could she not do otherwise? Was it menopause? Did it have to do with the events of her childhood in Amsterdam, with how Jews were viewed, or with how everything was silenced after the war? Did it have to do with her father or with the feeling of ‘not being allowed to exist,’ with compensating for that feeling, or perhaps with overly high or disappointing expectations?

How do you cope with the loss of a loved one you only knew as a child, and how do you get to know her through others?

Questions, questions, and more questions, and every answer seems to raise new questions.

A personal quest for identity, a restoration of loving after grief, anger, and pain.

And how do you translate all of that into music?
