Radboud, tussen zwaard en ziel

  • van 21 March 2026 t/m 18 March 2029

For anyone wondering why Radboud Castle is called that, this exhibition provides the answer. Not only that, ‘Radboud’ takes you to rich and powerful Frisia in the early Middle Ages and the eternal struggle with the Franks.

Radboud was king of the Frisians, albeit the elected version. The ancient Frisians lived in tribal groups. Each tribe had its own chieftain, and the king was chosen from among these men: military leader and spokesman (diplomat). Frisia controlled the waterways, and ships were the most important means of transport for trade.

The Franks wish to expand their power and set their sights on strategic border cities of the Frisian realm. Radboud stands between the Frankish sword and the Frisian soul: it is his task to protect his people, his realm, and his culture in a changing society.
