Lezing: De vliegtuigcrash in Wervershoof

On the night of June 25–26, 1942, more than a thousand British bombers departed for Germany. One of these aircraft, the Whitley BD 201, did not return. On the return flight from Bremen, the plane was shot down over West Friesland by a German night fighter and crashed into a potato field in Wervershoof.

Just before the aircraft exploded, four crew members managed to parachute out of the Whitley. A fifth crew member perished inside the plane. Behind this crash lies a poignant story about the crew, their families, and the consequences that the events of that night carried with them for generations to come.

During this lecture at the Medemblik War Museum, the audience is taken on a journey through the story of the Whitley BD 201. Based on extensive research, the crash is reconstructed, and the crew members behind the historical story are given a face. The search for their descendants and the remarkable encounters that emerged from the research are also central to the event.

A special part of the story is the visit of co-pilot John Glover Moriarty’s children to the crash site in Wervershoof. Through unique footage and an exclusive interview with his son Simon, the public gains a personal and poignant insight into the lasting impact of this event.
