In the early Middle Ages, Frisia, a habitable strip along our entire coast, was closely connected to its neighbors around the North Sea. Around 800 CE, it came under the control of the mighty Frankish Empire and became a popular destination for Vikings. What actually happened during that transition from the early Middle Ages to the Viking Age? What exactly was the situation regarding contact with the Viking world? Can we still find traces of it?
