About the performance

An innocent children’s game takes on a very different meaning during the Second World War. After the German invasion on May 10, 1940, everything revolves around hiding: people, documents, food, information, but also memories, feelings, and secrets.

At the center is a small red diary. When grandson Jan finds it, he discovers a side of his grandfather that has never been told before. In the diary, he reads about an unexpected encounter with a woman in Camp Westerbork. Amidst the uncertainty and fear, a special love blossoms, but what begins as a glimmer of hope is overtaken by the reality of war.

For years, this story remained hidden. Now Jan decides to open the diary and give his grandfather’s history a voice after all.

Followed by: interactive lecture

Following the performance, there will be an interactive lecture in which we delve deeper into the theme of hiding during the Second World War. We will discuss the various ways in which people kept themselves, their possessions, and their stories hidden, while also drawing a connection to the present day.

The show is directed and performed by Jeffry Seelen and musically accompanied by Niels van Laarhoven. The production is handled by WOLK Entertainment.
