‘The playing of Kelvin Grout is characterized by great simplicity, always at the service of the composer, and the character comes from many, many nuances that you only hear from the greatest pianists of our time. Somebody once said that ‘Kelvin is not a pianist, he is a colourist’ and that makes his playing very personal and his sound is difficult to define, but it always goes straight to the heart.’ – Pianist Magazine 2025

This season, British pianist Kelvin Grout celebrates an anniversary: 70 years on the concert stage!

He built a very impressive career as a lied pianist. For six years he collaborated with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, after which he traveled the world in the company of singers such as Jessye Norman, Gundula Janowitz, Tom Krause, and Maarten Koningsberger, who brought him to the Netherlands. Since 2015, he has also performed solo piano repertoire with a rare subtlety characteristic of lied accompanists. During a concert for composer Daan Manneke, he discovered a new passion: piano music from the British Isles. This music is rarely heard in concerts, which is why he embarked on a kind of crusade to record and perform it. His first CD, featuring the enormously challenging Sonata by Frank Bridge, was very well received, as was the second (streaming) with music by Arnold Bax and William Baines.

For his 70th anniversary, Kelvin Grout has curated a program centered on the moment British music awoke from a 200-year slumber: Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Join Kelvin in celebrating his anniversary and enjoy the gems of English composers!
