During the nautical event, a large number of beautiful and authentic steam launches moor at the museum jetty of the Steam Engine Museum in Medemblik. It is a magnificent spectacle to watch the launches sailing back and forth on the Kleine Vliet, accompanied by large plumes of smoke and the typical chucking sound. For all launches, the following applies: they have a boiler and steam engine on board for propulsion . Subject to sufficient capacity, visitors may join the launch owners for a short ride for free. If you choose to head out to sea, take a cruise on the IJsselmeer with the SS Noordzee , a sailing steam company of which there are only a few left in the Netherlands.

Authentic steam launches

Subject to sufficient capacity, visitors may join the sloop owners for a short ride for free. Experience it for yourself: become part of this magnificent spectacle. Step aboard a genuine steam sloop and sail along the Kleine Vliet for a while with a large plume of smoke overhead and while listening to the typical chucking sound.

Dutch Glory on the Oosterdijk

In the steam harbour, on the Vooroever opposite the museum, the SS Noordzee is moored at the jetty, ready to set sail with passengers. The ship, built in 1922 and part of the Maritime Heritage, served as a harbour tug and steam tug for diving and salvage work. In 1976, the ship became the property of the well-known Medemblik shipbuilder Kees Jongert. In 2010, the ship was placed under the ownership of the Stichting Stoomsleepboot Noordzee (Steam Tug Noordzee Foundation) with Den Helder as its home port. After years of restoration, the coal-fired ocean tug has been fully back in service under steam since 2019 and participates in numerous nautical events.

IJsselmeer boat tours

Want to sail on this historic ship? Then reserve a ticket (available at the box office) via 0227 544732 and step aboard for a cruise lasting just under an hour. Cruises depart on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00.
