During the Second World War, millions of Jews fell victim to persecution and extermination. Yet, a few miraculously managed to survive. Sally Perel and Lex van Weren belong to this extraordinary group. Their life stories show how courage, resilience, and the will to survive could make the difference, even under the most inhumane circumstances.
At the Medemblik War Museum, Carl Slotboom will give a lecture about these two impressive Holocaust survivors, whom he knew personally. Sally Perel survived the war by keeping his Jewish identity hidden and living for years as a member of the Hitler Youth. Lex van Weren managed to endure the horrors of Auschwitz, where his trumpet and music helped him maintain his humanity.
During the lecture, Carl Slotboom connects the life stories of Perel and Van Weren into a poignant narrative about survival, moral dilemmas, and the enduring power of personal memories. Drawing on their own testimonies and personal encounters with both men, he brings their experiences closer and shows how their stories continue to touch and inspire even today.
With historical depth, personal anecdotes, and room for reflection, he takes lecture attendees in the footsteps of Sally Perel and Lex van Weren. It is a history that not only wants to be told but also needs to be felt, and which aligns seamlessly with the mission of the Medemblik War Museum to keep the stories of the Second World War alive, relatable, and accessible.
The lecture starts at 20:00, doors open at 19:15.
