I am Yvo Verschoor, programme maker and organizer of everything that happens at Huis Midwoud, and following your performance here, I would like to invite you to attend the performance *Verzwegen en Vergeten*, testimonies of a concert grand piano.

The performance is a very personal story about my search for the past of the concert grand piano on which several of you have also played, but above all, it is a prompt to reflect on how people treat one another, on the dangers of fake news, propaganda, discrimination, racism, exclusion, and the terrible consequences thereof in the run-up to the Second World War.

The performance tells the story of Aktion T4, a secret Nazi program to get rid of people with disabilities as quickly, cheaply, and efficiently as possible, because they were considered a threat to their so-called ‘Aryan super-race’.

These are themes that, unfortunately, are still relevant all over the world today, stories that must continue to be told, and for which I have chosen the form of a film-concert narrative.

By now, about 1,500 people have seen this performance, but there were few young people among them, and I would like to see that change, so this is a first step. After the performance, I would like to talk to you about the show, about how it came about, and about ‘making’ in general. Perhaps we can inspire each other and new ideas and connections will emerge.

In this film concert story, Yvo Verschoor tells of what Frau Buch, the largest concert grand piano at Huis Midwoud, experienced during her long life at the place where she stood from 1926 to 2011—a former psychiatric hospital in Berlin-Buch—and how they ended up here in Midwoud.

Frau Buch witnessed Aktion T4, a sophisticated Nazi program from 1939 to 1941 to eliminate as many patients as possible as cheaply and efficiently as possible. Ultimately, this cost the lives of 300,000 people in Nazi Germany. Together with Frau Buch, Yvo zooms in on Werner, one of the many victims, who was murdered at the age of 15 simply because he had occasional epileptic seizures and was not very good at learning.

This production, directed by Maarten Mourik, was realized thanks in part to the Mondriaan Fund and premiered during the pandemic after 10 years of research by Yvo and more than 25 years of research by Rosemarie Pumb (Berlin-Buch).

The performance draws attention to the suppressed horrors of the Nazi regime leading up to the Holocaust and will continue to be shown regularly at Huis Midwoud, because exclusion, discrimination, and antisemitism are unfortunately still very relevant, and so that more and more people ‘know and do not forget’.

The reactions after the last performance of Verzwegen en Vergeten were truly overwhelming again!

It doesn’t happen every day that people come to thank you after a performance with tears in their eyes. There were people for the second, third, and even fourth time who had brought others along and were once again completely emotional and impressed.
