Unicorn is an Irish swing-folk band. Celtic folk and swing, with Klezmer, Shanties and Bluegrass excursions but also sailor’s music and some pop ballads. Light-headed, feet off the floor, thirsty throat – a performance by Unicorn never leaves the audience unmoved. The rousing Celtic music of the folk band usually ends in a feel-good swing party where people sing along at the top of their lungs. But don’t let anyone be fooled by the seemingly casual ease with which the band presents itself on stage, behind that cheerful facade there are true musicians who understand each other like a ton of bricks.
The driving forces behind the Irish folk spectacle are accordionist Martien Tijburg and guitarist John Kuiper, the duo has been the beating heart of Unicorn since its foundation (1996). Lead singers Marit Verwer and Jolanda Traarbach and violinists Karin Bakker and Erna Sommer make up the team
complete. Professionals with partly conservatory background, but now incurably infected with the Celtic folk virus.
