Steam models
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, model builders from far and wide will come to the Steam Engine Museum in Medemblik to demonstrate their steam models, often exact scale copies of original steam engines. A treat for lovers of miniatures and everything related to steam! The friends group de Minitruckers.nl will also be holding demonstrations again on Sunday with the radio-controlled miniature trucks that drew a large crowd last year.
Vibrant weekend full of activities
During the Steamfair, a varied range of stationary machines, steam cars, steam tractors, hot air engines, a steam bicycle, and much more can be seen. The inland water behind the museum is bustling with activity as many radio-controlled (steam) boats sail back and forth—a feast for the eyes—as are the beautiful steam locomotives puffing clouds of steam as they make their rounds on the Gauge 1 model railway. Naturally, the 7 1/4 museum steam train is also present, offering children a free ride on the track on the museum grounds.
Mini trucks
On Sunday, you can enjoy the miniature traffic driving around a road circuit provided by the friends’ club Minitruckers.nl. The miniature trucks, manufactured by themselves, are fully functional scale models, with many hours spent perfecting every detail. Fun for young and old!
Super steam during Steam Model Weekend! Dredger ‘Vooruit’ under steam, welcome aboard.
The last coal-fired bucket dredger in the Netherlands is housed in the collection of the Netherlands Steam Engine Museum. The dredger ‘Vooruit’, owned by the Krikke company from Heerenveen, was taken out of service in 1991 after half a century of dredging. In 2005, the ‘Vooruit’ and its dredging barge were moored in the museum harbour of the Steam Engine Museum. Since then, it has been sanded, painted, and welded; the boiler and machinery have been cleaned, overhauled, restored, and inspected for safety. Thanks to the great efforts of volunteers, the ‘Vooruit’ was not only preserved but even brought back under steam. Since 2009, the boiler has been fired up a few times a year, and the buckets that have scooped dredged material from the seabed at numerous locations in the Netherlands begin to grind into motion.
Thanks to the virtual presentation, the dredger can always be viewed not only from the outside but also from the inside. However, the moments when visitors can see the dredger under steam *and* look inside are unique. On these super steam days during the Steam Model Weekend, that is possible again! Welcome aboard!
