Spring fever? Feel like getting out and about?
At the Steam Engine Museum, we are ready! During the May holidays, from April 18 to May 3, the fire in the boiler will be stoked, and you can see the impressive collection of steam engines in operation. Will you be stopping by on our steam days and/or enjoying the spring sunshine on our terrace?
Exhibition in renovated visitor center: ‘The story of the steam pumping station’
For history enthusiasts, the permanent exhibition on the pumping station and water management over the past 500 years is highly recommended. From the 16th century onwards, reservoir and polder windmills were used to regulate the polder water level. The windmills were effective until they were superseded by steam pumping stations in the 19th century. Through the ‘eyes’ of the Vier Noorder Koggen steam pumping station, dating from 1869, you discover how the West Frisians have been striving to keep their feet dry for centuries and what steam power has meant in this regard. Unique objects, such as the beautiful coat of arms plaque from 1720 and the silver hensbekers, support this story.
Adventure for children
With miniature steam engines, you can generate steam yourself in the Steam Lab and discover what steam power does. If you lend the stoker and the blacksmith a hand, you will receive a real ‘stoking diploma’ and a ‘forging diploma’ as a reward. So roll up your sleeves and get to work!
