Lezing ‘Truus Menger en Hannie Schaft’

  • 19 April 2025
    • 20:00 – 22:00

On Saturday 19 April, Martin Menger, reporter for the NHD in West-Friesland, will take you on an impressive journey through the personal history of his mother, Truus Menger-Oversteegen (1923-2016). During the Second World War, she was actively involved in the armed resistance in Haarlem and the surrounding area, together with her younger sister Freddy and Hannie Schaft. This also meant that she had to liquidate traitors. With sometimes dramatic repercussions by the occupier as a result.

“It’s still human work and we couldn’t have foreseen everything,” she later said. Her dedication to saving Jewish children, by bringing them to safety, was recognized in 1976 with the Yad Vashem award at the Holocaust Center in Jerusalem.

The intense experiences during the war proved fertile ground for Truus’ career as a visual artist decades later. Her artworks and poems bear witness to the unspeakable human toll that a global conflict takes, not only for her but for many who have suffered the consequences of this tumultuous period. During the meeting in the War Museum, Martin Menger will share this fascinating and moving life story with us.
