Encounter or confrontation? Two characters meet on stage, finding themselves at the intersection of two stories. But they quickly realize they come from different stories. More accurately, they appear in two different novels by the same author. And that author also wrote this play specifically for them, with an uncertain premise.

These characters question each other as fictional figures. They’re concerned with their status and their roles, and moreover, they’re both unhappy and unfinished, which is the nature of fictional characters in novels. They don’t, they feel, come across very well.

What can you do to capture the sympathy of a large audience when your playing space is so limited? How does that end?
