The recently deceased “voice of mud and roses” Shane MacGowan broke through in the 1980s with the infamous band The Pogues, who combined the rhythms of the Sex Pistols with age-old Irish melodies. His poetic pen described Irish immigrant life, drug use, and raw love. Among the long list of admirers is Flip Noorman, who pays a unique and especially powerful tribute to MacGowan in “Hemels.”
