Cees Bakker – Vleermuis lezing

  • 11 May 2025
    • 15:00 – 16:30

Almost everyone has seen a bat at some point, in the evening in the garden, on the street or in the park. At dusk they come out to hunt mosquitoes and moths. For some people a fascinating sight, for others a real nightmare: the bat.

Bats conjure up nasty thoughts for many people. Bats are said to fly into your hair and attack you to suck blood and they are said to spread all kinds of diseases. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Few people realize that bats are very special animals and play an important role in nature.

Did you know that bats are the only flying mammals and do you know anything about how they live, how they can see in the dark, where they have their roosts, how they survive the winter, what they eat and how they hunt? Most of the answers you will get this afternoon relate to the bats that occur in the Netherlands.

A piece of Man bites dog is used about winter counts, how a bat detector works and examples of bat boxes. There is also a simulator with which you can explain how a bat catches an insect and the special sounds that the bat makes are also discussed. There are also sound recordings of the different species and under different circumstances. To make it easier to recognize species, bat poop has been poured in that you can view.
