At the Steam Engine Museum, located in the former steam pumping station Vier Noorder Koggen, you can see many craftsmen at work practicing their craft during the Crafts Weekend. For example, visual artist Rein Veldboer shows the technique of traditional letter carving in wood and there are demonstrations of basket weaving, midwinter horn building, ceramics, wood turning, pewter casting, thatching and much more.
Pewter casting, fun for young and old
When heated, it becomes liquid and you can pour it into a mold where it cools and solidifies again. This is how you make the cutest figures. Would you like to try it yourself? At the pewter caster you can cast your own pewter figure for a small fee.
Framing shop
On Saturday, Paul Kramer from Paul’s Framing Shop will demonstrate the traditional framing of prints and paintings.
Blacksmith’s shop from 1869
In the old forge of the mill the blacksmith shows his forging skills. If you help the blacksmith to stoke the forge fire, you will receive a real ‘blacksmith diploma’ as a reward.
Super steam, anything that can spin spins!
This weekend, both the machines inside the museum and some machines outside at the new steam yard will be running. In the museum harbor, you can view the coal-fired bucket dredger under steam. Step aboard and discover how the crew used to live and work.
Steam days during Ascension weekend & Pentecost
Both during the Ascension weekend and during the Pentecost days the museum is under steam and the boiler is fired to run the machines. Come and have a look on our steam days and discover the world of steam power!
